How to: Colorful Makeup on Darker Skin Tones

Hi Bellas,

Welcome back to my blog! Today, I am thrilled to share some exciting tips and tricks on creating a vibrant, colorful makeup look that beautifully complements dark skin tones. Whether you're gearing up for a photoshoot, a special occasion, or just want to experiment with some bold colors, this guide is for you!

In case you missed it, be sure to check out my video where I transformed my gorgeous model Sharice for a pink-themed photoshoot. Here’s a breakdown of the steps and products we used to achieve that stunning look.

1.  Hydrate and Prep the Skin Really Well

A well-prepped canvas is crucial for any makeup look, especially when using vibrant colors. Before applying any makeup, make sure to hydrate and moisturize the skin thoroughly. Use a primer to create a smooth base and to help the makeup adhere better. For Sharice's look, we used a lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer followed by a gripping primer suited for her combination skin type. This step ensures that the makeup goes on smoothly and stays put all day.

2. Choose Vibrant Pinks That Complement Her Skin tone

When working with darker skin tones, it's essential to select shades that will stand out and enhance natural beauty. For Sharice's look, I opted for vibrant pinks that pop against her complexion. Colors like fuchsia, magenta, and deep rose are fantastic choices. These shades not only add a burst of color but also highlight the warmth and richness of dark skin.

3. Layer Cream and Liquid Products

To ensure the colors stay vibrant and last throughout the day, layering is key. Start with a cream blush or eyeshadow as your base. Cream products tend to be more pigmented and provide a solid foundation for powders. Next, apply a matching powder blush or eyeshadow on top. This method helps to lock in the color and adds dimension to your look.

4. Highlight and Contour Strategically

While the focus is on the colorful elements, don't forget to highlight and contour strategically to add depth and dimension to the face. Use a highlighter that complements the pinks you’ve chosen and a contour shade that enhances the natural shape of her face without overpowering the bright colors.

5. Set Everything in Place

Finally, to make sure your makeup stays flawless, set everything in place with a translucent powder and setting spray. Opt for a long-lasting, hydrating setting spray to keep the makeup looking fresh and vibrant, even in summer heat.

And here is the final look!
