Ultimate Guide to Creating a Barbie-Inspired Makeup Look in 2023: Step-by-Step Tutorial & Tips

We have officially entered the Barbie era.  With the new movie, young and alike are turning out their best Barbie glam.  Barbie, an iconic figure that has transcended generations, continues to inspire us all.  With her flawless complexion, vibrant eyeshadow, and perfect pout, Barbie has become a makeup muse for many. So, how can you recreate this iconic look? Here's a step-by-step guide to achieving the perfect Barbie makeup look.

Step 1: Skin Prep

Before any makeup application, it's crucial to start with clean, exfoliated and well-moisturized skin. This will ensure a smooth canvas for your makeup and help it last longer. Barbie is known for her flawless complexion, so opt for a medium to full coverage foundation.  I personally love that Barbie's skin is plastic and fantastic, so I recommend going for a satin or dewy glow.  My recommendation to clients is NARS light reflecting foundation.

Step 2: Eyeshadow

Barbie's eye makeup is usually vibrant and colorful. To capture her signature look, I'd choose one bold color such as blue and hot pink and place it on your lid as your focus color.  To get color impact, try placing a colored pencil or jumbo crayon underneath the eyeshadow to make it pop.  Check out this super fun NYX Eyeshadow palette - it has all the fun barbie colors.

Step 3: Eyeliner

To make your eyes pop like Barbie's, apply a winged eyeliner. This will give your eyes a larger appearance and add a touch of drama to the look.   If you're a beginner, try applying a winged liner using a dark eyeshadow on an angled liner brush.  For my pros, I recommend liquid or gel liner.  My favorite is the makeup artist cult favorite Inglot AMC Gel Liner shade #77.

Step 4: Lashes

To complete the eye makeup, apply generous coats of mascara. This will give your lashes volume and length, just like Barbie's.  And I never say no to a pair of good false lashes.  Try going for a wispy pair to keep the eyes open.  My go to's our Ardell Demi Wispies.

Step 5: Blush and Highlight

Barbie's cheeks always have a rosy glow. Don't be timid with blush, in this case more is more!  Choose a hot pink or fuchsia color on the apples of your cheeks. This NYX blush in electro is the perfect vibrant shade.  Don't forget to add a shimmery highlighter on the high points of your face for that perfect Barbie-like glow.

Step 6: Lips

Finish off the look with a bold pink lip color. Barbie is rarely seen without her signature pink pout.  I recommend lining the lips with a bold pink liner first, then filling it in with your favorite lipstick.  I love MAC Lipstick in Candy Yum Yum - the perfect hot pink.

Remember, the essence of Barbie makeup lies in its perfection. So, take your time to blend your eyeshadow and achieve sharp lines with your eyeliner. With some practice, you'll be able to perfect this iconic look!
