A Modern Take on Brushes - BrushLab Makeup Brushes Review

Hi Bellas,

I'm back with another review.  Many of us are makeup brush junkies, and when a new line of brushes comes out it's always exciting to see the latest and greatest.  I've reviewed brushes for BrushLab before, but they were mainly of the hair care variety.  This time around, they've launched a line of really cool brushes and I can't wait to share them with you.

When I first received these brushes, I was intrigued by the design.  They stand out from most brushes for one main reason - square handles!  Their black and white striped, square handles give them a really modern look.  I've actually witnessed these brushes through their development stages, offering feedback and seeing the improvements.  Here are my thoughts:

All of these brushes are synthetic.  They have black bristles with white tips which complement the handles nicely.  The brushes actually remind me of the Costco Holiday brush set from last year, but the bristles are a little more softer and looser.  I can see this looking very chic in a black and white themed bedroom or bathroom in your sephora inspired brush holders, he he.  After washing the brushes, I noticed very minimal shedding.  The bristles are very soft and feel great on the skin.

Each brush is individually packaged in its own sealed plastic bag (yay for being sanitary) and they all have their own cute quote on the package.

I used these brushes for a few weeks before actually doing my review.  At first, I was a bit thrown off by the square, thick design of the handle.  It took a bit of time to get used to holding them comfortably.  Shorter handles do offer the advantage of more brush control and the square handles prevents the brushes from rolling around at the table.  However, I'm used to thinner round brushes.  If it was up to me, I would have thinned out the bases of the brush handles a bit more, but I think it comes down to personal preference.  Remember the pencils back in the day which were square and thick vs the regular thin, cylinder ones?  This reminds me of that.  It's not bad, just different.

Overall, the brushes work well.  My favorites are the powder brush and the dense crease brush.

PROS
-Interesting and Unique Design
-Square handles prevent brushes from rolling on a surface
-Sturdy
-Synthetic bristles are cruelty free and vegan friendly
-Cute Packaging
-I like how each brush is wrapped separately for sanitation purposes and how each one has its own cute saying
-Crease brush and Powder brush is really nice
-Brush handles are shorter - some prefer this for more control
-No bleeding after washing, very minimal shedding
-Affordable Price

CONS
-takes time to get used to the handles
-some of the brushes are a bit too soft and thin, which doesn't deposit as much color
-eyebrow brush is large and scratchy
-eye smudger brush - the bristles are short compared to large square handle - be careful not to poke yourself in the eye with the edge of the handles
-the square design is okay, but i'd prefer a more tapered in square shape at the top of the handle
-brushes can be a bit bulky to hold and to store due to thick design

Do I Recommend?  I think it all comes to whether or not you like the square handles with these.  A lot of the brushes are decent, but I'd definitely recommend looking into the crease and powder brushes - very nice.  If you're looking for decorative brushes that work, these could also be an option for you.  However, if you're not one for square, thicker handles, you may want to skip.

You can find these brushes at www.brushlab.com.  The brushes are sold individually and range from $9 to $16.
