After reading so many posts on all the hot new nail colors of the season, it really motivated me to do something I haven't done in a really long time...paint my finger nails! I didn't have the motivation or cash to really go out and hunt the new Essie summer nail colors, but I decided to pull out one of my favorites. This is a hot pink nail polish by Finger Paints that I bought from Sallys. You might be able to tell that Hot Pink is one of my favorite colors...notice how the nail polish matches my watch perfectly!
I used a base coat from Sallys, put on two layers of the hot pink polish, and one layer of top coat.

It came out like this. Pretty good right? I probably should have taken the extra step to push back my cuticles, but I'm too lazy for all that. Luckily my mama blessed me with her good nails...they're strong and can grow super long without breaking. I try to avoid them getting too long because they end up looking fake.
So I was all proud of myself...but why after a few hours did I find myself touching up already? I hadn't smudged it or anything, but it was chipping as if I had worn it for days! I touched it up and went on. The next day, more chips! Again I touched it up a few times during the day. You can tell that I was really committed to keeping my nails up. By day three, they were a hot mess. I ended up taking off the nail polish.
Why does this happen? Do I need more coats? A better nail polish? Help a sista out!

SUCH a nice color. I know it seems redundant, but make sure you do a base coat plus two top coats. It really helps! that way when u start to chip, it gets the clear coats first.

Its possible that the polish was old or that your base and top coat were either old or just not up to par. You could also have naturally oily nails which would cause the polish to come off quickly.
Next time try to buff them out first then base coat (Seche Vite has a ridge filing that works well on natural nails), 2 coats of polish, and try Seche Vite top coat (their products are great!). There is another brand that I can't remember but the base is called Sticky and the top coat is called Wet.

A good base and top coat is the key. I use MAC's underlacquer and overlacquer for half a year already and it was worth the money! :)
one thing we always tell customers at work is that nail polish RARELY ever lasts on your own natual nails. some last better than others, depending on how you are with your nails. & another thing, the more coats, the better chance of chipping. it becomes thicker, but you got the steps down with the base, polish, and then top coat. a good tip is to buff your nails. not too much, but enough. you should also put some cuticle oil from your cuticle down to the nails after you buff and then wash your hands. then apply the polish. when you buff it, it gives it a clean smooth surface. it's just like reapplying makeup after you've already had it on there for a few hours, it just doesn't look right. but i love the color! hope that helps =)
hot color! it may be your nail polish, or are you grooming horses or something thats hard on your nails? yes a good base coat, 2 coats of polish, then a good top coat, try seche, that stuff is crazy, drys fast, makes it shiny and keeps ur polish on, it's a b@tch to take polish off when its still on, hence why the salon ppl take it off for me :P you're inspiring me to paint my nails again!

love the bold color! i used to work as a home health aide, and i used my hands and fingers a WHOLE heck of a lot. one thing i found that helps is letting each coat COMPLETELY dry before going on to the next. cause if you just layer a new coat onto a semi wet coat, the first one will still be moist and won't provide a good base for the second coat. it's time consuming, but well worth it! also, if you use your fingers a lot, i suggest a high end polish. i really noticed the difference when i started using OPI polishes.
hey ren! beautiful color! there are great top coats and bases, but then there are polishes like opi that can last on natural nails for like 2 weeks without touchups. now that i have acrylic i wear anything, but when i was simply getting manis, opi was a top choice because it lasted very well.

this is what you do to help those fabby nails looking wet n'last...
I suggest you use just plain good ol wet n' wild 'nail glossies 203"...that shit is the bomb diggety...then i always use either OPI, ZOYA , and Essie...a beautiful color on you would be this candy hot matte cream pink called 'pansy 74'...after 2 full coats of your base color top again while still wet your went n wild nail glossie...
trust me lady my nails stayed strong and fabulous for 6 days...looked like i just got my naiiiilsssssssss did..

i, unfortunately, was not blessed with strong nails. my nails break all the time. thank god for acrylics. altho' when i got into a fight once, the acrylic lifted up my entire thumbnail from the nail bed. oy. it was painful, and i had to get a tetanus shot.
gorgeous shade! I think everyone else has covered the bases - really let each coat dry (it's a pain in the butt, but definitely helps) and using a good topcoat helps as well. I'm really hard on my nails (I keep them short now, and hardly wear nail polish) because I hit the keyboard hard, but a decent manicure lasts about 4-5 days, sometimes more for me.

Have you looked at 8ty8beauty.com or head2toebeauty.com? They have super low prices on high end nail polish. I usually stock up when I buy so my shipping costs will offset the purchase price. But China Glaze has hot colors and it's super cheap on those sites. alllacqueredup.com has awsome tips and great swatches. Happy painting!
